Ozone Sanitizing in Jetted Bathtubs

What Is Ozone Sanitizing?
Ozone sanitizing is a highly effective method for keeping jetted bathtubs clean and hygienic. It works by converting oxygen (O₂) into ozone (O₃)—a powerful natural oxidizer that kills mold, mildew, and bacteria inside the air and water lines of the tub. This helps prevent microbial buildup in moist, hard-to-reach areas of the internal plumbing.

Is Ozone Sanitizing Safe?
Yes—ozone sanitizing is widely regarded as safe when used as recommended in bathtubs. At typical bathing temperatures, ozone naturally reverts back into oxygen (O₂) within 8 to 10 minutes, leaving no chemical residue behind. The only noticeable effect is a clean, fresh scent, often compared to the air after a rainstorm.

Why Consider Ozone Sanitizing for Your Tub?
While not strictly required, ozone is considered the most effective and convenient form of sanitation for jetted bathtubs:

  • Air Jetted Tubs: Ozone is helpful but less critical. Most air systems include backflow preventers, and warm air purging dries out moisture effectively. However, ozone-infused air adds an extra layer of sanitation and freshness to the system.

  • Water or Hydro-Spa Jetted Tubs: Ozone is highly recommended—small amounts of residual water inevitably remain inside jet elbows and plumbing lines between uses. Ozone actively kills mold and bacteria, helping keep the system clean with minimal user effort.

Are There Alternatives to Ozone Sanitizing?
Yes—regular manual cleaning remains effective if done consistently:

  1. Fill the tub with warm water (at least 1 inch above the highest jet).

  2. Add 1 cup of household bleach or a trusted bleach alternative.

  3. Run the jets for 15 minutes.

  4. Let the water sit for another 15 minutes, then drain.

  5. Refill with clean water, run jets for 15 minutes to rinse, then drain again.

Repeat this cleaning routine every 2–3 months.
When combined with a properly installed ozone sanitizing system, this periodic manual sanitising can safely be reduced to one treatment each 12-15 months.

Does Ozone Replace Manual Cleaning?
Yes—in many cases. A properly designed and installed ozone generator can reduce or even eliminate the need for regular manual cleaning. It continuously sanitizes your system between uses, offering hands-free hygiene and peace of mind.
