Acrylic vs. Cast Iron Clawfoot Tubs: Heat Retention
When comparing clawfoot tubs, material can affect how quickly the tub absorbs heat from the bathwater. We compared a CoreAcryl acrylic clawfoot tub with a similarly sized cast iron tub.
Clawfoot Tub Heat-Retention Test
Both tubs were filled with the same amount of 134°F water. Temperatures were measured over 25 minutes in a 65°F room.
| Tub material | Fill water | 0 min | 5 min | 10 min | 15 min | 20 min | 25 min |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CoreAcryl acrylic | 134.0 | 129.2 | 122.4 | 120.1 | 117.2 | 113.8 | 109.2 |
| Cast iron | 134.0 | 125.7 | 118.3 | 115.5 | 112.3 | 107.9 | 103.3 |
Which Clawfoot Tub Retained More Heat?
After 25 minutes, the CoreAcryl tub measured 109.2°F and the cast iron tub measured 103.3°F. In this comparison, the acrylic clawfoot tub retained a water temperature 5.9°F higher.

Clawfoot Tub Product Line Comparison
Our clawfoot bathtub ranges share durable, repairable acrylic construction, but they differ in width, interior space, drain design, and available hydrotherapy systems. If you are comparing clawfoot tubs for sale, the best starting point is deciding how much room you have and whether you prefer a traditional soaking tub, one type of jet massage, or a system that combines air and water jetting.
The chart below compares the SanSiro HL, Calypso, SanSiro SS, and SanSiro EM product lines by construction, bathing space, drain and overflow design, available features, and the type of installation or bathing experience each range suits best.
Compare Our Clawfoot Tub Ranges
| Product line | Tub construction | Width and bathing space | Drain and overflow | Jetting and added features | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SanSiro HL | Single-piece, 3/4-inch CoreAcryl acrylic body with an insulating air gap for a solid feel and improved heat retention | The narrowest exterior width among comparable styles in our clawfoot tub ranges | Circular openings in the tub wall and floor accommodate an external drain and overflow assembly; compatible with most vintage-style external overflow drains | Non-jetted soaking tubs | Bathrooms with tighter width restrictions and shoppers who prefer the traditional appearance of an exposed drain and overflow |
| Calypso | Single-piece, 3/4-inch CoreAcryl acrylic body with a solid feel and an insulating air gap for improved heat retention | Wider than comparable HL tubs, providing generous interior space relative to the exterior dimensions | Built-in slit overflow and a supplied Firm-Touch pop-up floor drain, tailpiece, and escutcheon create a cleaner look without an external overflow pipe | Non-jetted soaking tubs | Most non-jetted applications where spacious bathing and concealed overflow components are priorities and the bathroom can accommodate the additional width |
| SanSiro SS | Two-piece reinforced acrylic construction with concealed space between the inner and outer shells for jetting components | Exterior and interior dimensions vary by model; compare the measurements for the individual tub | Built-in overflow and supplied Firm-Touch pop-up drain | Choice of air jetting or whirlpool water jetting; ozone sanitation and chromotherapy are available options | Shoppers who want a classic clawfoot tub with one preferred style of concealed jet massage |
| SanSiro EM | Two-piece reinforced acrylic construction with concealed space between the inner and outer shells for both air and water systems | Exterior and interior dimensions vary by model; compare the measurements for the individual tub | Built-in overflow and supplied Firm-Touch pop-up drain | Includes air jetting, whirlpool water jetting, ozone sanitation, and an underwater chromotherapy light | Bathers who want our most complete clawfoot hydrotherapy system and the flexibility to use air bubbles, targeted water massage, or both |
Quick takeaway: Choose SanSiro HL when exterior width is limited or you prefer visible vintage-style plumbing; choose Calypso for a spacious non-jetted soak with a built-in overflow; choose SanSiro SS for air or water jetting; or choose SanSiro EM for the complete air-and-water hydrotherapy experience.
Note: Available sizes, shapes, finishes, and configurations vary by model. Review the individual product specifications and installation documents before ordering. All four ranges include a 10-year limited warranty on the tub body; refer to the current warranty terms for complete coverage details.
Choosing a Clawfoot Tub Style
The shape of a clawfoot tub affects more than its appearance. The rim height, backrest shape, and location of the raised ends influence how the tub feels when reclining and how it fits within the bathroom. Exact bathing-well dimensions and drain locations vary by model, so compare the individual product specifications before choosing.
Classic Roll-Top Clawfoot Tub
A classic roll-top tub has a traditional rolled rim and a balanced vintage profile. Depending on the model, one or both ends may provide a reclining surface. This style is a good starting point for shoppers who want a traditional clawfoot bathtub without the more pronounced raised ends of a slipper design.
Single-Slipper Clawfoot Tub
A single-slipper tub has one raised end designed to support the back and shoulders while reclining. The asymmetrical silhouette also creates a strong focal point in the room. Check which end contains the backrest and where the drain and faucet will be positioned before finalizing the bathroom layout.
Swedish Slipper Clawfoot Tub
An elegant evolution of the single slipper tub with a flowing shape.
Double-Slipper Clawfoot Tub
A double-slipper tub has raised reclining ends on both sides, creating a symmetrical shape and a more enclosed bathing position. Because these designs are often larger, compare both the exterior footprint and the interior bathing space rather than relying on overall length alone.
French Bateau Clawfoot Tub
An elegant evolution of the double slipper tub with flowing lines.
Double-Ended Clawfoot Tub
A double-ended tub generally provides similarly shaped ends on both sides, often with the drain positioned toward the center. The rim is typically less elevated than on a double-slipper design. Always confirm the drain location and interior shape for the individual model.
To get a clearer sense of interior space and reclining position, compare tub sizes using our body-height examples.
Soaking and Jetted Clawfoot Tub Options
Clawfoot tubs are available for traditional soaking as well as several types of hydrotherapy. The best choice depends on the bathing sensation you prefer and the level of system maintenance you are comfortable performing. Available configurations vary by model.
| Tub system | Bathing experience | Maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Non-jetted soaking tub | Quiet, traditional soaking without powered massage | Normal bathtub cleaning; no internal jet lines |
| Air-jetted tub | Gentle, widespread bubbles and a lighter full-bath massage | Generally lower maintenance than a water-jetted system; follow the care instructions for the selected model |
| Whirlpool water-jetted tub | Stronger, more targeted water massage | Internal water lines require periodic cleaning according to the tub manual |
| HydroSpa air-and-water-jetted tub | Choice of air bubbles, targeted water massage, or both systems together | Maintenance includes the water-jet system; follow the instructions supplied with the tub |
Browse clawfoot and pedestal jetted tubs, or read our bathtub buyer’s guide for a more detailed explanation of the available hydrotherapy systems.
Clawfoot Tub Feet, Finishes, and Faucets
The feet, exterior finish, drain trim, and faucet can substantially change the appearance of a clawfoot tub. Available combinations vary by model, so treat each product page and installation document as the authoritative source for compatible options.
Feet and Decorative Finishes
Selected tubs are available with different foot styles, metal finishes, or decorative exterior treatments. When coordinating a bathroom, consider how the feet relate to the faucet, drain, overflow, and other visible hardware. Custom or artisan finishes may also affect pricing and lead time.
Faucet
We offer our Victoriana freestanding or deck mounted faucet with all clawfoot tubs in a variety of finishes. This vintage style faucet pairs well with all the tubs and should be at home in any vintage or transitional setting. We also offer a selection of Waterlands Freestanding faucets on many tubs, these more modern designs can still pair excellently with a clawfoot tub particularly in a transitional or eclectic style bathroom.
See our selection of freestanding, deck-mounted, and wall-mounted tub faucets.
Confirm Compatibility Before Ordering
Because drilling, drains, overflows, and trim options are model-specific, confirm the complete configuration before purchasing the tub and fittings. If you need assistance matching components, contact Baths of Distinction with the tub model and preferred faucet arrangement.
Clawfoot Tub Frequently Asked Questions
What size clawfoot tub should I choose?
Choose a tub that will fit in your space firstly, and keep in mind that some tubs are deeper or more spacious than others of the same length. If you have a large space available, consider that you may not actually want the largest tub you can fit depending on your height. If you are shorter, particularly for people below 5'4" your feet may not reach the other side of a large tub and you will not be able to support yourself with your legs while you sit in the tub which is usually uncomfortable. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you are unsure.
What is the difference between a roll-top, slipper, double-slipper, and double-ended clawfoot tub?
The roll-top, sometimes referred to as a classic style or classic shape tub and the double-ended tub are both flat topped. This is primarily an aesthetic preference. Single and Double Slipper tubs have a curved shape, which allows the part of the tub where your back rests to be longer and typically supports your head better, while the center or low end of the tub remains low to avoid making it impractically tall to step over. Slipper shapes are typically more comfortable, but Flat shapes can usually be made comfortable with a pillow as well.
Can a clawfoot tub have air or water jets?
We offer air and water jetting on our SanSiro/Empress line of tubs, where the jetting components are fully concealed within the tub. We don't offer jetting on our standard clawfoot tubs, but we do offer air jetting on the pedestal versions of these tubs where the jetting components can be concealed inside the pedestal.
What type of faucet works with a clawfoot tub?
Clawfoot tubs naturally pair well with vintage style faucets but many of our tubs also go surprisingly well with modern freestanding faucets especially if your bathroom is not strictly traditional. Check on the tub you like to see if it is possible to use a deck mounted faucet, otherwise you will need to use a freestanding faucet.
Does a clawfoot tub require additional floor support?
Unfortunately the only simple answer to this question is that it depends on your floor and someone qualified must inspect it and make the determination. Most modern buildings can support the weight of a filled acrylic clawfoot tub without modification, but you should pay especially close attention to this in old buildings where it is common that floor joists were too small or overspanned by modern standards even if they are still in good condition. If your floor is a concrete slab, there is typically little concern that the tub would overload it. Likewise if you are replacing a cast iron tub or some other heavy tub, if the floor supported the old tub with no issue there is not likely to be an issue with your new tub.
Do acrylic clawfoot tubs retain heat well?
Yes, in fact by our testing they retain heat better than cast iron tubs in many conditions. For the ultimate in long soaks though, we recommend a water heater which is available on our SanSiro and Empress line of tubs. This will keep your bath warm as long as you like without needing to add new water.
How are clawfoot tubs delivered and installed?
Because clawfoot tubs are large they are shipped via LTL (Less than Truckload) freight, which basically means the tub will be delivered by a larger truck than normal and dropped off at your curbside, in your driveway or sometimes can be placed into an easily accessible garage. Once you get your tub and unpack it, most acrylic tubs are easy enough for two people to lift and move around to the final installation site.
Choosing the Right Clawfoot Tub Size
A clawfoot tub should fit both the bathroom and the people who will use it. Exterior dimensions determine whether the tub fits the available space, while the interior bathing well, backrest shape, overflow depth, and water capacity influence how the tub feels in use. These details vary by model, so review the specifications and installation information for the individual tub before ordering.
What to Confirm Before Choosing a Tub
- Available floor space: Measure the tub location and allow appropriate clearance for plumbing, cleaning, and movement around the tub. Pay attention to the distance to other fixtures (toilet, vanities etc.) as there is typically a minimum clearance dictated by building or plumbing code.
- Delivery path: Confirm that the tub can pass through exterior doors, hallways, stairways, and bathroom doorways. All of our clawfoot tubs have removable feet which can make getting them through tight spaces a bit easier.
- Interior fit: Compare the bathing dimensions, not just the overall length of the tub as some tubs of the same length are more spacious than others.
- Water depth and capacity: Review the overflow depth and water capacity as some tubs of the same size are deeper than others.
- Faucet placement: Determine whether the selected model accommodates a rim-mounted faucet or requires a freestanding or wall-mounted faucet. We offer pre-installed faucets on our tubs that accommodate deck mounting, but keep in mind that you may need to remove this faucet if you need to bring the tub through a door sideways.
- Faucet drilling: We will pre-drill faucet holes on deck mounted tubs to your specification if you like, or your builder can drill them on site.
- Drain and overflow: Confirm the drain location on the tub is suitable for your installation. All of our clawfoot tubs are reversible, so you can place an end drain on the left or right side of your space. Calypso and SS/EM tubs have built in overflows and do not need any additional pieces, HL tubs require an external overflow pipe.
- Floor support: Consider the combined weight of the tub, water, and bathers. Consult the installer or contractor when floor capacity is uncertain.
Please refer to specification sheets and installation documents as the authoritative source for the selected model. If you are uncertain about sizing, faucet compatibility, or plumbing requirements, contact us before ordering.
